In general, pumps can be classified into 2 parts, positive pump displacement and dynamic work pump.
Positive Displacement Pump is a type of pump that converts mechanical energy from the rotation of the pump shaft to a pressure energy to pump fluid. In this type of pump a high head is produced but the resulting capacity is low. (Rotary / Rotary pump and piston pump / Reciprocating)
Centrifugal Pump (Dynamic Pump)
is a pump that has the main element of a motor with a high speed rotating impeller blade. The incoming fluid is accelerated by an impeller which increases fluid speed and pressure and throws out volut. (Centrifugal pump)
